South Glastonbury Volunteer Fire Department History

The South Glastonbury Volunteer Fire Department was organized September 28, 1927. Herbert Clark was the first Chief, Joseph Gordon 1st Assistant Chief, Ralph Tryon 2nd Assistant Chief, Jim Killam Treasurer and Stanley Sheffield, Secretary.

A 1928 pumper and Buick chief’s car were purchased approximately 1928/29. A 1943 Chevy (army surplus) pumper and 1939 Chevy rescue/service truck were received at Co. #2 as the war ended.

Meanwhile, Co #2, which was housed in a garage next to, and owned by the South Glastonbury Community Club, was also growing. The Commission tried to improve their facilities also, but it wasn’t until 1948 that they occupied their first firehouse. This station has since been renovated twice, vastly increasing its size.
