Training

An excellent training resource.

Membership Training Program

Every recruit firefighter in the Glastonbury Fire Department receives 160 hours of training before they achieve active status as a firefighter. The Firefighter-One class is conducted by the Hartford County Fire School at the Connecticut Fire Academy and meets the criteria for national certification as a firefighter as prescribed by the National Fire Protection Association. This training standard is the same for all professional firefighters – career or volunteer. The Hartford County Fire School employs some of the best fire service instructors in Connecticut.

Every recruit firefighter in Glastonbury also receives training in hazardous materials response to the operational level as defined by the National Fire Protection Association. They are trained to the national standards in the Incident Command System of the National Fire Academy and the National Incident Management System of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Every new member is trained to the awareness level standard in Terrorism - Weapons of Mass Destruction and they are thoroughly taught the department’s Standard Operating Procedures that include all the required national standard benchmarks for effective operations and Firefighter safety.

Every member of the department is required to take a minimum of 24 hours of refresher training each year. Mandatory training each year includes Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, CPR, Ladders, Hazardous Materials, and Live Structural Firefighting at the Glastonbury Fire Department’s Thomas G. Manager, Sr. Fire Training Facility located on Nutmeg Lane.

The Glastonbury Fire Department is well served by many veteran firefighters and officers who are certified to the National Fire Protection Association standard as Fire Service Instructors. These talented senior professionals provide in-service training to the highest operational performance levels.

Although all national standards are met by the Glastonbury Fire Department, it is still the individual dedication and commitment of every member to be at their very best that makes our department proud. Each member is keenly aware that their individual actions may be needed to save a live and to keep their fellow firefighters safe. Our mission is to SAFELY protect life and property. Our goal is go home healthy to our families after every emergency incident.
