The Glastonbury Fire Cadet program shows youth from 14-18 years old the basics of firefighting. Those enrolled in the Fire Cadet Program learn the importance of safety and team work, as well as how to become a firefighter. Cadets learn fire behavior, building construction, extinguishers, search and rescue and many more topics. Once a Cadet turns 15 and demonstrates competency on the fireground, he or she is permitted to attend regular fire department drills, as well as selected calls. While on the fireground, Cadets serve extremely valuable and helpful tasks to assist the firefighters, while gaining hands on experience and being part of the Fire Department team. GFD Cadets participate in Memorial Day Parade
The photo below was taken before the start of the Memorial Day Parade. It shows the Glastonbury Fire Cadets waiting in front of Engine 11. These are 8 of the 14 presently in the program. The Cadets learn and train in many areas to eventually become firefighters. The program is overseen by Advisors who are active firefighters with the Town of Glastonbury. Every year the department benefits from the Cadets as they turn 18 years of age and reapply to become firefighters for the Town of Glastonbury. Glastonbury Children ages 14 to 18 may apply by calling the Chiefs Office at 860-652-7555.
